五个关于常春藤联盟的真相大揭秘! ivy.jpg The Ivy League, an athletic conference of universities in the North Eastern United States, can be something of an infamous term in American culture. The eight institutions that make up the Ivy League are known for great academics, but can also have a reputation for elitism and exclusivity. Which myths are true and which are as ancient as the gothic architecture?
1. All Ivy League students are rich.
The Ivy League of old was comprised almost exclusively of the sons of the American upper class. Times have changed. Today all eight schools of the Ivy League have a policy called “need-blind admissions”. In other words, your ability to pay doesn’t enter into your admissions decision. As a result, students from lower and middle-income backgrounds increasingly populate these universities.
CONCLUSION: MYTH
2. Ivy League schools are ridiculously expensive.
Like most American universities, the Ivies can have a pretty hefty price tag—sometimes upwards of $60,000 per year. However, their large endowments allow them to have some ofthe most generous financial aid programs in the country. So, while the sticker price may be terrifying, if you need a lot of help to pay for college an Ivy League school could be one of your cheapest options.
CONCLUSION: MYTH
3. Being a legacy is very important.
Being a “legacy”, or the child of an alumnus, is often seen as a huge leg up in the Ivy admissions process. While legacy status can provide a small advantage, other factors are much more important. Don’t worry if you don’t have a connection to an Ivy—most students there don’t!
CONCLUSION: MYTH
4. The schools of the Ivy League are really selective.
Ivy League schools definitely have low acceptance rates—between 6 and 14%. These low numbers mean that getting in can be as much about luck as anything. Try not to let the statistics discourage you from applying, but be aware that there are no admissions guarantees.
CONCLUSION: REALITY
5. Ivy Leaguers are stuck-up.
Before starting college I was worried about finding relatable, down-to-earth people given the stereotype of the elitist Ivy Leaguer. This couldn’t have been further from the truth. I can speak only from my own experience, but the students here are just like those at any other school, and most everyone is friendly, humble, and interesting. The students come from diverse backgrounds and experiences—normal kids who worked hard in high school and took a chance on an application.
